80th Annual Meeting of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery

Prof. Dr. med. Hans-Wilhelm Pau

Dear Colleagues,
friends and visitors,

The 80. Annual Meeting of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery took place in Rostock from May 20-24, 2009. The historic Hanseatic city with one of the oldest universities of Germany had never before hosted our conference, but must be considered as the native town for Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, at least in Germany. It was in 1899 when the university of Rostock opened the first hospital for ear, nose and throat diseases under the direction of Otto Körner, who in 1901 became the first ordinary professor for oto-rhino-laryngology. This year we celebrate the 110. anniversary of the foundation of the "Otto Körner Clinic" - one among many other reasons to choose Rostock for our Annual Meeting.

Based on the success of our last meetings, the German congress also had an international orientation. Though the main language was German, in one auditory an International Forum was organized in English. Many colleagues from neighbouring countries of the Baltic sea region and from all over the world participated in this forum, in which experts held state-of-the-art lectures, round tables, and presentations on current topics.

This year´s motto was: "Technology for Quality of Life - Implants and Biomaterials in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology". The spectrum for such implants was expanded and included not only permanent implants like cochlear implants, implantable hearing aids, or bone substitutes, but also aids like tracheal cannulas or nose packings. 11 experts presented their reviews on such implants. Other main topics were: dysfunctions of the Eustachian tube, Meniere´s disease, gastroesophageal reflux, new imaging techniques, botulinum toxine, new techniques for tonsillectomy, tinnitus, current concepts in head and neck oncology, balloon sinuplasty, and many others.

Over all, the Rostock Annual Meeting was very successful, with more than registered 2100 participants. Besides the scientific program Rostock also offered a broad spectrum of social activities in a friendly maritime atmosphere.

Medical science is subject to constant developments. Therefore it may occur that current research results which could not be taken into account when submitting the German abstracts are now part of the presentation of abstracts/posters at the Annual Meeting of the German Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology, Head and Neck Surgery.
The English abstracts which are published after the Annual Meeting may therefore diverge in content from the German abstracts on this site. Hence, the published articles meet the state of knowledge at the completion date of the respective manuscripts.
