Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) first emerged in China as a new infectious disease in November 2002. Within weeks, the outbreak had spread and Toronto turned into one of the major hit areas. North York General Hospital became the focal spot of SARS in Toronto as it affected numerous staff, the tragic loss of a colleague and hospital closure for three months.

The challenges and experiences of an emergency department hospital staff during the SARS crisis will be discussed. The lessons learned and improvements made as a result of the outbreak concern an improved infection control prevention and containment of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome in an Emergency Department.
