Madelung’s disease, also known as Launois-Bensaude syndrome or Benign Symmetric Lipomatosis (BSL), is a rare disease characterized by symmetrical, diffuse, painless deposits of adipose tissue located on the sub-occipital area, the parotid region, the cheeks, the neck, the shoulders and the upper trunk. A higher frequency was reported in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea.
The disease affects primarily male patients. Alcohol abuse is considered a predisposing factor.
The treatment is mainly symptomatic: conservative surgical removal of the lesions as indicated clinically or for cosmesis.
We report two cases that underwent surgical treatment for this rare disease in our clinic during the last two years.
