Introduction: In addition to rigid gold implants, we used our specially developed platinum chains for the surgical therapy of lagophthalmos. The flexible design is intended to reduce postoperative complications. The aim of our study was to survey the surgeons in writing about the postoperative complications after platinum chain implantation and to statistically compare the results with a metanalysis on rigid gold implants.
Methods: Nineteen questionnaires were assessed and discussed for the evaluation of 212 platinum chain implantations. Moreover, 103 publications on 1000 rigid gold implants were analyzed in the context of a metanalysis of the postoperative results.
Results: Adequate lid closure can be obtained with both the rigid gold implants and the platinum chain. The use of platinum chains reduced the postoperative complication rates for contouring, migration, extrusion, ptosis of the upper lid and development of corneal astigmatism or postoperative infection. The survey also revealed that the considerable cost of the platinum chain was a problem.
Conclusion: Lid loading is a very simple and reversible procedure for the surgical treatment of lagophthalmos. Platinum chain application reduces postoperative complications and thus increases the effectivity of the treatment method.
