Magnetic nanoparticles are used in medicine in vitro and in vivo. In molecular biology they are used for in vitro diagnostics in a routine setting for biomagnetic cell separation and in vivo as contrast agent for magnetic resonance imaging. Furthermore, especially in cancer treatment, there are several therapeutic applications of magnetic nanoparticles like magnetic hyperthermia. In this application magnetic nanoparticles are injected into the tumor tissue and heated by an external alternating magnetic field. Another in vivo application is a drug delivery system called Magnetic Drug Targeting (MDT). After intraarterial application magnetic particles bound to a chemotherapeutic agent can be steered in different body compartments by an external magnetic field.

In the present study the biodistribution of magnetic nanoparticles after MDT was investigated with a high resolution 3-dimensional x-ray-tomography. The same tumor tissue was investigated histologically in serial cross sections of 3µm thickness.

X-ray-tomography pictures after MDT show the distribution of magnetic particles in the whole tumor reaching the smallest supplying tumor vessels. Histological cross sections confirm the results of the x-ray-tomography.

3-dimensional-x-ray-tomography is a non invasive, high resolution methode which allows to investigate the distribution of magnetic particles. It shows that the whole vascular system of the tumor can be reached by Magnetic Drug Targeting and that is a very important fact using this drug delivery system for treatment of cancer.
