Introduction

Somatosensory evoked potentials recorded intraoperatively during surgery of scoliosis are very useful for assesment of the afferent spinal transmission. However their amplitudes are low and in some cases may cause doubts regarding the success of surgery. Therefore (MEPs) were tested in this study because of their larger amplitudes and more stable form, verifying transmission within cortico-spinal tracts and peripheral efferent transmission.

Methods

In 8 girls MEPs were recorded intraoperatively over peroneal nerve branches at the popliteal fossa during the scoliosis correction (C-D method). Potentials were induced with the magnetic field stimulator overcranially at the area of vertex. Normal amplitudes of MEPs were not less than 800 uV, their latencies with a mean of 29.1 ms and corresponding efferent conduction velocity was with 47.3 m/s.

Results

Fluctuations of amplitudes and latencies (from 500 to 1500 uV and from 32.3 to 37.8 ms, respectively) following distraction, derotation and compression procedures of spine were observed. Recovery of analyzed MEPs parameters comparing to those observed before surgery was initiated we found in all treated patients .

Conclusions

The effect of the surgical procedures performed during correction of scoliosis on the efferent transmission is transient as in cases of the somatosensory potential tests. MEPs recorded over the lower extremities nerve branches are always distinct enough to satisfactory confirm the proper efferent transmission no matter to the anaesthetics influence.
