GMS goes Altmetrics

GMS articles now display Altmetric attention scores offering an alternative insight into the impact of an article.

Traditional bibliometrics based on citation rates are more and more supplemented by alternative metrics taking in account the attention a publication generates in a variety of sources, including social media, online reference managers, Wikipedia, blogs, etc. Altmetric.com offers an algorithm collating a record of online mentions, shares, and discussions for an individual article.

The Altmetric badge is now displayed with every GMS journal article that has a score >0. The basic badge is displayed on the overview pages and the colourful donut below the article header. The different colours of the donut show the proportional distribution of mentions by source type. A mouseover displays the details of the score and clicking through will lead you to an information page with the latest mentions of each source.

Thus, beyond measuring the attention received by an article, the Altmetric score allows the reader to connect with other researchers sharing the same area of interest.
