30th anniversary of the GMS Zeitschrift für Medizinische Ausbildung
Dietrich Habeck, as Chairman of the GMA, founded in 1984 the association’s journal entitled “Medizinische Ausbildung” (Medical Education). The journal was produced in-house by the editor and distributed to the members of the GMA. In the first years it had mainly the character of a newsletter for the association. For further professionalization of the journal, the Thieme Verlag took over production and printing and the “Medizinische Ausbildung” was released in May 1998 for the first time as a supplement to the established journal “Das Gesundheitswesen”.
Not only for cost reasons, but because of the many advantages of open access (author retains rights to his publication, articles are available worldwide free of charge, etc.) the journal is published since 2005 by German Medical Science as an electronic open access journal under the name “GMS Zeitschrift für Medizinische Ausbildung” (GMS Journal for Medical Education). Since 2010, the journal consistently appears in two languages (German and English) to increase international visibility. On March 24, 2011 the journal was accepted for indexing in MEDLINE/PubMed, the most important medical bibliographic database, provided by the U.S. National Library of Medicine. Along with the recognition of the academic and editorial quality of the “GMS Zeitschrift für Medizinische Ausbildung”, this is an important contribution to higher visibility of research in medical education.
German Medical Science congratulates “GMS Zeitschrift für Medizinische Ausbildung” on the anniversary and wishes all the best for its future development.
