Background: In a landmark paper on “A Standardized classification of Ocular Trauma” Kuhn et al achieved two main objectives. Confusion in the terminology of ocular trauma was cleared, and each term was unambiguously defined. However though this classification is ideal for mechanical injuries (which are common) it does not hold good for non-mechanical injuries which are increasing. Trauma to ocular adnexa is universally accepted as part of ocular trauma. The present classification is not applicable there. Further any subject can be classified more than one way depending on the parameter chosen as criterion and the purpose of study.

Methods: In view of above it was thought of proposing a more generalized classification to include the above mentioned points. In this classification firstly ocular trauma is divided into local, associational and environmental. The local is further divided into mechanical and non-mechanical. Mechanical is further divided into adnexal and global. Global is divided into structural and pathological. Structural includes anterior segment and posterior segment. The pathological is same as described earlier i.e open globe and closed globe injuries and their further details.

Results & Conclusions: The present paper describes in detail the above classification along with its justification. It in no way alters the existing classification but only makes some additions to make it more comprehensive. It has been approved by the Ocular Trauma Society of India and ISOT will be requested to consider it.
