Background: The Rinecker Proton Therapy Center (RPTC) opened for patient treatment on March 16th 2009 with the first out of five treatment rooms. Besides the patient treatments the next treatment rooms are commissioned by Varian consecutively.

Material and methods: Statistics of several parameters reflecting the commissioning process during the ramp-up phase are collected and analysed.

Results: Process descriptions and statistics are presented.

Conclusion: Starting a Proton Therapy facility with one treatment room and to bring the system to the full functionality in a sequential way is the most reasonable way. Daily switching between the clinical and commissioning environment is practicable and safe.
