Researchers at LLUMC have had interest in using proton therapy for the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer since the center began clinical operations. This presentation will review the rational for proton beam therapy in lung cancer and review dosimetric issues unique to treatment of pulmonary tumors with particle beams. Results from two ongoing clinical trials at LLUMC will be presented. These trials include phase II trials in non-small cell lung cancer for subjects with stage I, medically inoperable disease and a second study for stage III patients that combines chemotherapy with proton therapy. Treatment outcomes including suvival, recurrence patterns and treatment toxicity will be discussed.
