This project was accomplished by the Deutscher Turnerbund (DTB) in 2004 with the financial support of the Federal Ministry of family, seniors, women and youth. DTB together with experts from science and practice (sport and health scientists, gerontologists and fitness trainers) had developed a training conception "Promotion of physical activity and general health for the high aged" for group leaders. It was exemplary tested and conveyed in the course of a training program among the Landesturnverbände ("federation of ").

It came out to be a large success

As the interest and the need among the group leaders in this subject is constantly increasing 10 further education training programmes were offered nationwide by DTB in 2005 and further trainings are to follow in 2006.

The "German prevention award" is suspended by the Federal Ministry of Health and social security for outstanding projects in health promotion and preventional matters. Its jury was completely convinced by the comprehensive conception and has chosen it as one of the 15 best projects nationwide.

The audience

The education programme is geared to the audience of the over 80 year old persons. It is a quite new development that 64% of the female and 42% of the male population are going to reach the limit if the high aged.

The trouble

As there are many people in their seventies and eighties still leading an active and independent life, the need for help among the high aged persons is increasing enormously.

The biological basic principle

There remains sustained, which is used. Our body system works according to the biological principal that only those functions are sustainable which are used and exercised continuously, therefore we have to train and exercise constantly as well as continuously in order to preserve its functional capacities. Only then they remain. If this is not adhered, there can be noticed a self-acting decrease of the biological functions.

The target

Maintain independence until the high aged. Therefore the major objective in further education programmes for group leaders will be "Sustainment of independence by promotion of physical activity and general health." Implicating a fall prophylaxis, the systematic training of daily activities and a muscle strengthening exercise programme in order to keep up independence.
