Demographic changes in western societies challenge the scientific community and put a new demand on issues like maintaining independency in old age. The compression of comorbidity remains as an important goal for the survival of the public health care systems.

The domain of physical activity is one aspect to sustain physical function as long as possible. Physical activity and physical fitness are closely related. An increase in physical activity most times leads to an increase in physical function as well.

By its nature physical activity plays an important role in different research areas, and different scientific networks eg. public health research (HEPA = Health Enhancing Physical Activity), fall research (ProFaNE = Prevention of Falls Network Europa)), aging research (EUNAAPA = European Network for Action on Aging and Physical Activity), and handicapped research (THENAPA = Thematic Network 'Educational and Social Integration of Persons with a Handicap through Adapted Physical Activity').

The presentation will emphasize the overlapping interest in the area of physical activity between the different networks groups. Although each network has its own research area the domain of physical activity and correlating questions are similar over the different networks. Future possibilities of collaborations and interactions will de discussed.
