Objectives: Through observing statistical difference between patients with headache and those without headache in nasal mucosa contact point (NMNP) and clinical outcomes of endoscopic surgery on these patients, to verify correlation between NMNP and headache and significance of nasal endoscopic surgery.

Methods: 185 volunteers were scanned by CT on sinus; the occurrence rate of various anatomic abnormalities was calculated. The occurrence rate of contact point between two groups was observed, and analyzed their statistical difference by χ2-test. 45 cases with NMNP were performed by nasal endoscopic surgery and followed up, which effects were analyzed by t-test.

Results: Nasal septum deviation was the most anatomic abnormality (41.08%), the next was middle turbinate gasification and the third was superior turbinate gasification. Nasal septum deviation contacted with inferior and middle turbinate was most common, followed by olfactory fossa contacted. Difference was significant between the group with headache and those without headache in nasal septum deviation and nasal mucosa contact at lateral wall. Nasal contact point excisions were performed under nasal endoscope and followed up. Post-operative headache degree was improved dramatically and improved mostly during the first 6 months after surgery, while the effect declined with time going.

Conclusions: Co-existence of nasal septum deviation and nasal contact at lateral wall was associated with headache, and which could be alleviated by septoplasty, and it was good for headache caused by other anatomic abnormality as well.
