Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate the results of combined treatment with CO2 laser microsurgery and interferon (IFN α2b) in children suffering from the laryngeal papillomatosis.

Material and method: In the study were included during a 14 years period (1996–2009) 32 patients aged from 2.9 to 10 years, diagnosed with laryngeal papilomatosis. When establishing treatments and the evolution of the patients, studiing the biomarkers expression and the changes they are responsible for had an important role. CO2 laser microsurgery (microsurgical excision and progressive vaporisation of papillomas) followed by IFN α2b adjuvant therapy was the management applied.

Results: Clinical examination revealed regression of papillomas in all patients. 21 patients (65.62%) had complete regression after primary CO2 laser microsurgery and additional IFN α2b treatment, and 11 (34.37%) had partial response to the combined treatment. In these cases second intervention was needed. In these patients we observed the presence of HPV type 11; they needed more CO2 laser interventions and more IFN α2b cures.We encountered no preoperative or postoperative copmlications or severe side effects.

Conclusions: The method of choice in laryngeal papillomatosis in children is a combination of CO2 laser microsurgery and additional IFN treatment, improving the prognosis of this recurrent viral disease. Studiing the expression of the viral markers and the changes they induce has a very important role in apreciating the evolution of the patients.
