Outline

Text

Introduction: Pharyngoesophageal spasm was identified as a factor limiting rehabilitation of laryngectomees. Aim: to estimate the incidence of pharyngoesophageal spasm and results of its prevention.

Materials: Prospective longitudinal study encompassing two groups: study group - 69 laryngectomees to undergo spasm prevention techniques, and control group - 52 laryngectomees.

Methods: Esophageal test, double contrast Roscopy, neurectomy of pharyngeal plexus, myotomy of pharyngeal constrictors, no-muscle layer closure of the pharyngeal defect with myoptomy of the esophageal entrace.

Results: The incidence of pharyngoesophageal spasm in the control group was 34,62% and 14,5% in the study group. In the control group spasm was significantly more common in patients older that 56 years of age. In the study group such correlation was not observed.

Conclusions: Significant part of the laryngectomees, mainly elder, suffer voice limiting pharyngoesophageal spasm which correlates to poor rehabilitation results in elderly. Pharyngoesophageal spasm preventing procedures might be most useful in elderly.
