Introduction: Tilting of the head leads to counter rolling of the eyes. The goal of the study was to evaluate the dependence of the subjective visual vertical (SVV) of the counter rolling of the eyes.
Patients and methods: In 20 healthy persons SVV and counter rolling of the eyes was measured upright, in 10° and 20° tilt position to the right and left. Tilting was achieved by head tilting during upright sitting and by static whole body tilting. Counter rolling of the eyes was measured by fundusfotographie.
Results: SVV during head tilting showed overcorrection compared to whole body tilting at 20° in both direction. Contrarily eye movement during counter rolling showed less increasement at 20° in fundusfotographie.
Conclusion: Overcorrection during SVV head tilting is not due to counter rolling of the eyes, but might be rather due to central nerval processing.
