Darstellung der Inhalte: Observational (non-experimental) studies simultaneously pose a number of analytical challenges that have stimulated intense research in many areas of modern biometrics and biostatistics. The methodological literature grows exponentially yet most methodology is never put to widespread use in applications. Moreover, much methodology addresses single issues, when typically many issues arise together.

In response, the international initiative STRATOS (STRengthening Analytical Thinking for Observational Studies) was formed in 2013 to stimulate a systematic comparison of pros and cons of alternative methodologies, identification of the issues that remain unresolved and promising approaches for tackling them and crucially, communicating the results to researchers spanning the spectrum from methodological development to application.

The STRATOS initiative has grown rapidly to involve over 80 researchers from 16 countries on 4 continents (see http://www.stratos-initiative.org/). Currently there are 9 topic groups (TG).

In two connected sessions (each session 80 -100 minutes) we will introduce the motivation, mission, structure and main aims of the initiative and provide first results from several topic groups. There will be four talks in the first session and three talks followed by a general discussion in the second session.

Speakers in the first session will be Willi Sauerbrei (Introduction of the STRATOS initiative and its main aims), Peggy Sekula (for TG5 on study design), Carsten Oliver Schmidt (for TG3 on initial data analysis) and Veronika Deffner (for TG4 on measurement error and misclassification).

The second session will concentrate on issues in design and analysis of high dimensional data (TG9). Speakers will be Axel Benner, Harald Binder and Jörg Rahnenführer. Finally there will be a discussion on future challenges and plans of the initiative and on possibilities to join or cooperate with STRATOS.

Depending on participants talks will be in German or English. Slides will be in English.
