Outline

Text

In 2015, more than 2.8 million people in Germany had a level of care. Of them, 72.6% received informal or formal home care, whereas 27.4% received full-time residential care. As older people use and need different types of care over time, it is important to understand the patterns of transitions in care.

The purpose of this longitudinal study is to identify relevant predisposing, enabling and need factors that are associated with informal or formal care utilization of adults older than 65 years by using Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Care Utilization. The findings will contribute to identify why and in which extent the utilization of care differs over time.

The study will analyze characteristics of 810 individuals from the KORA- (Cooperative Health Research in the Region of Augsburg) Age study between 2012 (t0) and 2016 (t1). The KORA-Age study is a follow-up of the KORA study with participants over 65 years who were randomly selected from population registries from Augsburg and its two surrounding counties in Southern Germany. A descriptive analysis of 810 individuals at baseline (t0) and 563 individuals at follow-up (t1) will show the extent of informal and formal care utilization, as well as care utilization in general. A logistic regression analysis with 563 individuals will estimate the associations of predisposing (e. g. age, education), enabling (e. g. living status) and need factors (e. g. level of disability, multimorbidity) with transitions of care between t0 and t1.

Methodological discussion will address the option to analyze the changes of need factors and their impact on transitions of care with mixed models. All confirmed associations will be compared with existing national and international literature and the study’s results will be interpreted within this context. It will be discussed how the findings can help to prepare the health care system for necessary adaptations and to provide adequate care for older adults in the future.
