Objective

To observe the metabolism change of trace elements in the blood of preterm infants and infants who suffer from retinopathy of prematurity.

Methods

We selected 30 preterm infants who had potential high risk factors for ROP as the study group and 18 normal infants as the control group. We measured the content of trace elements (such as Mg, Cu, Zn, Mn, Se) in their serum by spectrophotometry.

Results

The contents of Zn, Cu and Se in the serum of the 30 patients were (0.75±0.22) mg/l, (0.41±0.20) mg/l and (134.07±71.57)×10-3 mg/l, respectively, but (0.55±0.12) mg/l, (0.65±0.194) mg/l and (202.92±44.71)×10-3 mg/l in the 18 control subjects. The contents of Cu and Se are significantly lower in the study group than in the control group (P<0.01), while the content of Zn in patients serum is significantly higher (P<0.01). And there are similar result between the infants that suffer from ROP and the control group (P<0.01). The difference of Mn and Mg content in the serum of the two groups was not statistically significant.

Conclusions

The contents of Cu and Se in preterm infants who had a high risk of ROP are lower than those of the control group. Among them the contents of Cu and Se in the ROP infants are also much lower while the content of Zn is much higher. This may play a role for the development of ROP.
