On 12 April 2006, The Filatov Institute of Eye Deseases and Tissue Therapy completed its 70 years. It was founded in 1936 by V.P. Filatov an outstanding ophthalmologist and academician. In last few years, the institute is recognized as a research centre not only in Ukraine but across the world. Guidelines have been generated based on it. During its period of work, the institute has made a big contribution to development of global ophthalmological sciences. The main functions of the institute are: study of diagnostics, pathogenesis, prophylaxis and treatment of eye diseases, study of mechanisms of actions of new tissue therapy drugs and organizations of ophthalmological care for people in Ukraine. The institute has 9 clinical departments with 480 beds (Glaucoma Surgery, Corneal Transplantation and Anterior Segment Eye Pathology, Uveitis, Vitreoretinal Surgery, Cataract Surgery, Eye Trauma & Reconstructive Surgery, Eye Burns and Keratoprosthesis, Pediatric Ophthalmology, Department of Oncology). Laboratories are directly connected with the clinics. The laboratories include: Pharmocology of Tissue Preparations, Electronmicroscopy, Ultrasound, Laser, Roentgenology and Radiology, Pathomorphology, Micrcobiology and Virology, Photo and Fluorescein angiography, Functional Methods of Investigation and Disturbances of Binocular Vision, Ophthalmic Endocrinology. The institute is the large center on a professional training in the field of scientific and practical ophthalmology.

Every nation has its own extraordinary persons, who are associated with people hopes and dreams. Such person was academician Vladimir Petrovich Filatov. Filatov’s worldwide reputation was recognized in his surgical achievements in plastic surgery, using donor corneas from cadavers for penetrating keratoplasty in 1930’s and the originality of his theoretical concepts – Tissue therapy. The talent of Filatov was versatile and many-sided. He was interested in literature and art and has written poems and short stories. He was a very good painter too. During his scientific career he published 461 scientific papers including 90 supplements, regarding problems associated with keratoplasty. A scientist and innovator with a world-famous name, brilliant clinical physician, masterly surgeon, fine teacher and the head of a great ophthalmologic school, the public figure Filatov died on 30 October 1956. He was in his 82nd year of life.
