Objective

The study was conducted at the RH of Prizren, from July 2002 to October 2003 to assess success rate of external dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) with silicone tube insertion and present our modest experience.

Methods

In a retrospective study, records of 28 external DCR with silicone tube insertion, in a 16-month period were reviewed. Indications for DCR were epiphora, acute or chronic dacryocystitis. The silicone tube was removed after 3 to 4 weeks. The successful outcome was defined as symptomatic relief from epiphora and dacryocystitis and a patent nasolacrimal duct upon syringing.

Results

The age range was 20 to 59 years (mean 35.2). Females were 20 (71.4%) and males were 8 (29.6%). A silicone tube was inserted in all patients. 18 (64.3%) patients were operated under general anesthesia and 10 (35.7%). Follow-up was from 6 to 9 months. Overall complete success rate was 98.2% (26/28).

Conclusions

Ext-DCR with silicone tube insertion is an effective and highly successful procedure for the treatment of epiphora, acute or chronic dacryocystitis.
