Objective

To evaluate the outcomes of phacoemulsification at HCMC Eye Hospital, Vietnam and to compare the results between two different incision sizes.

Methods

872 eyes with age-related cataract received phaco surgery from 5 surgeons at Ho-Chi-Minh-City Eye Hospital through two techniques (phaco chop, phaco stop and chop) and two different incision sizes. The main comparative outcomes were visual acuity, endothelial cell loss (ECL) and complications.

Results

Colective data showed mean visual acuity(VA) of 0.6 at 1 day postoperation (n=872); 0.66 after 3 months (n=152). Visual acuity of 0.5 or better was the same between 3.2mm corneal incision group and 5.5mm corneal incision group (86.4% and 87.8%). In those who had VA of 5/10 or better, mean visual acuity of 3.2mm corneal incision group was slightly higher than 5.5mm corneal incision group (0.66 and 0.6) and 3.2mm corneal incision group produced less ECL (11.8%) than 5.5mm corneal incision group (16.15%) after 3 months postoperation. Complications between two groups were the same.

Conclusions

Phacoemulsification with large corneal incision and polymethely methacrylate intraocular lens (PMMA IOL) is aceptable in developing country.
