The international classification for ROP was first developed between 1984 and 1987. The German guidelines for ROP were developed later in 1999. Are these guidelines still valid? The revised international classification and the multi-centred "Early Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity study" (ETROP 2003) will be presented and the results and consequences of both discussed. Treatment of advanced ROP at an optimal moment can significantly reduce the risk of blindness in most cases. The therapeutic treatment strategies and results will be covered.
