Objective

Intravitreal triamcinolone application (ivTA) in combination with photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new alternative for the treatment of CNV in age related macular degeneration (ARMD). The objective of our study was to assess the efficacy of this therapeutic approach in relation to PDT alone.

Methods

We compared the records of 15 ARMD patients who had ivTA within 3 weeks after PDT with the records of 15 ARMD patients who had PDT alone. Parameters e.g. visual acuity, lesion size or classification of CNV and age of patients were similar in both groups. Patient follow-up ranged from 6 to 9 months.

Results

The group of patiets with combined photodynamic therapy with verteporfin and intravitreal triamcinolone showed a reduced retreatment rate in contrast to those who received PDT alone. Furthermore intervals between recommended retreatments were extended. We observed no major complications. An increase in intraocular pressure >25 mmHg was noted in 2 cases and was controlled with topical medication.

Conclusions

Our findings suggest that combined PDT and intravitreal triamcinolone injection constitutes a promising approach in the managment of CNV secondary in ARMD.
