Objective

Hyperglycemia in diabetes mellitus accelerates the nonenzymatic protein glycation and causes the increase of free radicals, which play an important role in cataractogenesis. Angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors = ACE-inhibitors /ACEI/, which enhance glucose absorption by the cell and are antioxidants, can have a positive influence on the process of the diabetes-induced cataract by the delay in the opacification of the lens.

Aim of the study

Evaluation of the speed of progression as well as morphology of opacification of the lens in rabbits with alloxan-induced diabetes.

Methodology

4 groups of 10 rabbits with comparable body weight: Group 0 - control group, group A - alloxan-induced diabetes, group E - alloxan-induced diabetes and Enalapril, group K - alloxan-induced diabetes and Captopril. The blood sugar levels were monitored and the lens morphology of both eyes was evaluated at weekly intervals.

Results

1. Rabbits with alloxan-induced diabetes, which were treated with ACEI, showed slower progression of opacification of the lens. This process was more evident in the group treated with Captopril, than in the group which received Enalapril. 2. In rabbits treated with Enalapril the opacification of the anterior and posterior cortex of the lens was observed, whereas the control group and Captopril recipients developed opacification under the posterior lens capsule within the central range.

Conclusions

ACE inhibitors slow down the pace of progression of opacification of the lens in rabbits with alloxan-induced diabetes mellitus, and the presence of sulfhydryl and carboxyl groups greatly influences the morphology and speed of formation of opacification of the lens.
