Introduction

At the clubfoot clinic of Helsinki University Central Hospital about 25 children with primary idiopathic clubfeet are treated yearly. We have began to treat all children with idiopathic clubfoot deformity with the Ponseti method since summer 2003. Before that extensive posterolateral or posterolateral and medioplantar releases were made, when a child with a resistant clubfoot deformity was 4-6 months old. In this study we represent our clubfoot treatment policy compared with the older system.

Methods

Prospective study with clinical and radiograhical examination results including economical aspects, treatment difficulties as well as possible complications.

Results

The first experiences in our prospective study show better general short-time results with much fewer operations.

Conclusions: The Ponseti method seems to be a promising method of treating clubfeet. Long-term treatment studies are needed.
