Our purpose was to evaluate osteoarthritis (OA) changes on X-ray after ACL reconstruction and the associated affecting factors. The study assessed 31 ACL reconstructed knees: 11males and 20females. We treated chronic ACL-deficient knees by reconstruction of the ligament using one-third of the patellar tendon. OA changes on X-ray were evaluated by using the scoring system of Keio University. In this system, OA changes were investigated three parts of the knee joint (P-F joint, Medal part and Lateral part of T-F joint) and were scored. We evaluated knee stability, the period of operation from injury, Lysholm score and the state of meniscus. Knee stability was measured by a three-dimensional motion analyzer. In thirteen of the 31 knees (42%), the score of OA changes increased. The average period until the surgery from injury was 35.3 months in the patients with OA changes and 7.2 months those without OA changes(p<0.05). Ten of these 13 Knees (77%) underwent partial or total menisectomy. The average of Lysholm score was 95.2 with OA changes and 87.2 without OA changes (NSD). No significant relation existed between knee stability and OA changes. Thirteen of the 31 knees (42%) showed OA changes after ACL reconstruction. The period of the surgery from injury and damage ofmeniscus had an influence on the incidence of OA changes after the surgery.
