Outline

Text

Objective: The authors present a project based on the collaboration between Neurosurgeons, Neuroradiologists and Engineers to approach the problem of cerebral aneurysms. Aim of their work is to develop new tools for understanding, estimating and treating cerebral aneurysms.

Methods: Starting from 3D angiographies in DICOM format, images are reconstructed by a segmentation technique and morphological analysis is performed by extraction of geometrical parameters and their statistical analysis. Flow simulations are performed for validation of statistical outcomes on morphology.

Results: The initial results show that the development and application of these methods is able to identify morphological characteristics of some classes of aneurysms. Analyses performed on anterior circulation vessel trees will be presented with particular attention to the role of the geometry of the parent vessel.

Conclusions: These studies stress the importance of the methodologies applied in order to gain some answers on the influence of morphology in hemodynamics and in disease development. Aim of these project is to build models and apply them to single cases in order to deliver a more individualized predictive analysis which might not only help to detect unfavourable vessel geometries but also be helpful in the development of individualized treatment strategies.
