Outline

Text

Background: Postpartum Depression is one of the most pregnancy- and birth-linked diseases with a prevalence of 7–16% [1]. Psychiatric diseases of the mother during and after pregnancy constitutes a risk for the mother-child-relationship and well-being of the child. Early childhood experiences are important for relationship competences and the emotional, physical and cognitive development of the child [2]. Furthermore breastfeeding is influenced by psychiatric diseases of the mother. In relation to that mothers with postpartum depression breastfed after three months significantly less than psychiatric healthy mothers [3]. It should be noted that especially breastfeeding is a positive factor for the development of the child and for the mother-child-relationship [4]. By reason of the positive influences of breastfeeding the initiative of WHO/UNICEF “Babyfriendly hospital” campaigns breastfeeding-support and breastfeeding-consultancy [5].

Aim/Research question: The study examines effects of as babyfriendly certificated hospitals measures on psychological well-being of the mother, mother-child-relationship and breastfeeding.

Methods: Using validated questionnaires we collect data on depression, mother-child-relationship and breastfeeding attitude prenatally and breastfeeding three months postpartum in an experimental group (childbirth in a babyfriendly certificated hospital) and a control group (childbirth not in a babyfriendly certificated hospital). The sample consists of women that are at least in their 24th gestational week.

Results: Against the scientific background we expect positive effects of as babyfriendly certificated hospitals measures on mother-child-relationship and psychological well-being of the mother in relation to the control sample. Furthermore we assume that women that give birth in babyfriendly certificated hospitals breastfeed significant frequently and longer.

Relevance: We expect our work to contribute the knowledge towards advancement of mother-child-relationship, psychological well-being of the mother and health promotion of the child through breastfeeding. In addition we focus the quality assurance of as babyfriendly certificated hospitals and their influences as an aim of our research.

Recommendations/conclusions: Against the scientific background we expect significant influences of as babyfriendly certificated hospitals measures on the named factors that lead to reduction of postpartal depression and improvement of the mother-child-relationship.

Ethical criteria and conflict of interests: The research was submitted to an ethics committee. It was financed from own resources. There is no conflict of interest.
