Background: Diagnostic reasoning is a cornerstone of the work of general practitioners, mostly based on medical history and physical examination and sometimes assisted by additional diagnostic test(s). New additional diagnostic tests and tools are constantly being developed and the possibilities of performing minimally or non-invasive tests in general practice are expanding. Yet again, scientifically assessing clinical effects of a new test in general practice is a grand challenge to both researchers and physicians, and successful implementation is dependent on even more factors.

Objective: This workshop aims to provide the participants with an overview of the scientific and practical requirements when aiming to succesfully evaluate and potentially implement innovative (point of care) diagnostic tests in general practice. The presenting team will present and discuss a framework for the evaluation and implementation of innovative (point of care) diagnostic tests in general practice.

Overview of the workshop contents: Short presentations of completed trials of (point-of-care) test-treatment strategies in the exemplary conditions of trombo-embolic events, cardiac chest pain, respiratory infections and shoulder pain, with an interactive introduction and discussion section.

Discussion: The workshop leaders are all GP/researchers working at the department of Family Medicine of Maastricht University, within the research programme Optimising Patient Care. The department and presenting team has a strong track record in diagnostic research and evaluating new diagnostic tests in general practice through large prospective randomised studies.
