Recension

With the eighth edition of “Striebel”, this standard educational text for anaesthesiology has remained true to its regular interval of three to four years for revision.

As in the previous editions, the author has placed value on the current developments in the field, integrated the current guidelines, for instance into the treatment of sepsis, and included innovations, such as medications for relaxant antagonizing.

The book continues to confidently cover the field of anaesthesiology for beginners and students with its well thought-out organisational structure, in which the largest part of the book is dedicated to anaesthesia and only relatively small sections to intensive care, emergency medicine, and pain therapy. Its origin as a script for teaching nurses and medical interns can be seen in the best of ways: numerous diagrams by the author clearly illustrate the equipment and techniques and do an excellent job of complementing the highly understandable text. The many captioned photos increase the clarity even more and are surely an additional help for all those who are preparing for exams and were not able to take a concrete look at each setting.

Along with the intuitively clear organisation of information and the well-executed graphic revisions, the extensive experience of the author in teaching and training is especially apparent in the selection of the topics. In particular, the detailed explanation of the anaesthetic machine, which is used on a daily basis yet seldom understood, and its breathing circuit is almost legendary and useful to anyone undergoing training. Although why an entire page of the book is dedicated to the rather specific roto rest bed remains a mystery known only to the author.

Most highly recommended for medical students undergoing practical training, it is unlikely that this edition of the book will reach much beyond its intended readers: information is absent on point-of-care diagnostics such as TEM and multiplate analysis, as well as coverage of video laryngoscopy for difficult respiratory passages. However, in its eighth edition this book continues to do full justice to its subtitle – für Studium und Ausbildung.
