Though SARS cases in Ukraine have not been revealed until now, since 8.04.2003 a large system of antiepidemic measures had been started.

The main antiepidemic measure of prevention SARS outbreak in Ukraine was putting of Sanitary-Quarantine departments (sanitary-quarantine check-points and sections) onto intensified duty on National frontier of Ukraine [1]. This measure was directed to provide intensified supervision and control of passengers of plains, ships and trains arriving abroad (especially from "SARS-infected" countries), interruption of illegal migration. In the context of this work were realized inquiries of passengers, briefings of airplane, ship and railway crews concerning prophylactic actions [2]. The airports were prepared for disinfection actions. The readiness of isolation wards on first-aid posts, sanitary stations for aircraft and other transport was checked.

Department of Public Health and National Sanitary-and-Epidemiologic Service assigned hospitals for treatment of SARS-infected persons and for observation for contactors. Necessary medicines, including antiviral, hormonal drugs, antibiotics, instrumentation for artificial pulmonary ventilation, protecting clothes, and disinfectants formed national non-reducible reserve [[3],[4]]. All medical staff was instructed with epidemiology, symptoms, treatment and SARS prophylaxis.

The operational workgroup for monitoring of epidemiologic situation with SARS all over the world was established by the Ministry of Public Health.

Commonwealth was offered till 08.07.2003 to refrain from traveling to China (especially Hong Kong), Singapore, Vietnam [5].

In case of SARS outbreak in Ukraine

The schemes of immediate quarantine and urgent summons of specialists in working and non-working time were elaborated.

Also it was proposed the realization of medical examination of the Subway staff, other public transport before workday, and everyday disinfection of public transport, waiting rooms, railway stations and airports. Everyday medical examinations of children and teenagers, providing with vitamins their food, severe sanitary-antiepidemic regime were proposed too.

It was also prescribed to inform systematically commonwealth by mass media about epidemiologic situation with SARS, measures of individual and public prophylaxis [1].
