Background: Integrating the installation of proton therapy equipment into the building construction process presents extraordinary challenges to owners, architects, and contractors. Schedules, costs, labor issues, and indirect contractual relationships differ from conventional building projects, and require a careful approach.

Tsoi/Kobus & Associates leads in the design of Proton Therapy Centers in the United States and abroad. Erik Mollo-Christensen (Principal) and Jonathan Cohen (Associate Principal) will share their firm's extensive experience with the design and construction of these unique facilities.

Materials and methods: Case studies and data drawn directly from these projects will provide timely and relevant information for institutions that are evaluating the feasibility of developing a Proton Therapy Center. In the early planning stages, decision-makers need to consider:

1.
Project Team Organization
When should the proton therapy equipment vendor (PTEV) be selected?
When should the contractor be selected?
What delivery method is most appropriate (construction management, bid) relationships?
How can responsibilities be interconnected among the separate contractual owner?
2.
Construction Planning
How can the building contractor coordinate with the PTEV engaged separately by the Schedule of construction to proton-ready completion
Review of interface requirements with contractor and subcontractors
Rigging and installation: coordination of separate subcontractors
3.
Coordination Between Building Contractor and Proton Equipment Vendor
Labor issues: union jurisdictions, responsibilities, labor harmony
Use of site staging areas
Shared/overlapping responsibilities for safety
Shared vs. sequential occupancy of building portions
4.
Phased Completion and Occupancy
Shared responsibility for damage/repair of completed work
Proton-ready completion: building and systems
Maintaining indoor conditions with equipment access openings
Separating equipment and patient areas
Temporary shielding
