The aim of this presentation is to try to find the answer to the following questions „Why some elderly participate in various kinds of activity? Why some are active and adhere to participation in physical activity (PA) etc. while the others do not participate at all or are often withdrawing from the exercise programs?“ One of the key factors seems to be motivation. We are raising important questions how and when to motivate elderly people to exercise; where and from whom to seeek advices; who should provide counseling in this important field? How to define the field of counselling in PA?

One of the crucial prerequisites for professionals to work in the field of PA with elderly is to understand basic terminology: intristic/extristic motivation; level of perceived competence, self-efficacy, empowerment, cooping strategies, behavioral changes, lack of support etc. The fundamental knowledge in the field of motivation is essential for implementing the active lifestyle in the group of elderly persons.

To specify the motivating factors and motivational techniques, which can be used in counselling to support compliance in exercise programs, important aspects are presented: assessment of PA personal history and evaluation of motives (often divided into appearance, social, fitness, competence and interest or enjoyment), participation in goal setting, communication, adapted exercises program, equipment.
