Instruction

A recently published prospectively randomized FDA study has shown a significant benefit of IPD (X-stop) compared with non-operative treatment of lumbar stenosis.

Material and method

Within the last 18 month we operated patients with x-stop, including a maximum of two lumbar levels. Some patients received this treatment alone, in some patients it was used in addition to a spinal fusion in different levels. Only the patients treated by IPD were included in the study. All patients were examined using the "Zurich Claudication Questionnaire - ZQC" (Stucki et al. 1995) preoperatively and 6-12 months postoperatively. The score investigates amount of clinical symptoms, physical function and patient satisfaction.

Results

The average age was 67 years. 82% respectively 85% had a significant improvement considering clinicals symptoms respectively physical function. 85% of all patients were satisfied by the treatment. There were no perioperative complications such as infection, loosening of the implant, nerve root lesion or dura leakage. 2 patients needed revision of the implant due to lack of improvement and persisting claudication symptoms in one patient resp. increasing symptoms in the other patient.

Discussion

The overall results of our patients and the results of several multi-centered studies show that the new method of IPD by the X-stop-implant is a good and safe method of treatment in the early stages of lumbar spinal stenosis.
