Objectives: Over the past years Neisseria gonorrhoeae has acquired clinical significant resistance to sulfonamides, tetracyclines, penicillins and ciprofloxacin.
Methods: To determine German trends in the prevalence of microbial resistance of.N. gonorrhoeae we performed medical examinations with genital smears in sixty-three male patients with clinical urethritis in the period from 1/2008 to 12/2009.
All included patient were men having sex with men (MSM) and seventynine percent of them were HIV positive. We also looked for other sexual transmitted diseases.
We treated all patients with 1g azithromycin once und change it if necesarry after we had the resistenttests.
Results: We found 64% ciprofloxacin-resistance, 22% doxycyclin-resistance, 8% azithromycin-resistance, 5% ceftriaxon-resistance and 7% cefixim-resistance.
Conclusions: Ongoing nationwide and local antimicrobial susceptibility monitoring is crucial to ensure appropriate treatment of gonorrhoeae.
