Introduction: Presentation of Thyroid Cancer surgical treatments and compare to surgical treatments of different thyroid pathologies.

Methods: It is a retrospective study, performed by the analytical and comparative statistical methods, of patients that have undergone surgical treatment of the thyroid gland with emphasizes thyroid cancer.

Results: Between 2000–2008, in ENT-HNS Clinic, UCCK in Prishtina 686 patients were surgically treated for thyroid gland pathologies. 554 patients were treated as enlargement or nodes of thyroid gland, 67 as thyroiditis Hashimota and Morbus Graves and 59 as thyroid gland cancer. Histological types of the thyroid carcinomas: 63 papillary, 17 follicular, 3 medullar and 3 anaplastic carcinomas. Most common surgical interventions in patients with Struma were: Lobeisthmusectomy in 38%, Lobectomy in 31% and STT in 17% of cases. Cases with Morbus Graves have been treated with STT and with near-TT or TT. Depending on the location and the number of nodules, surgeon can perform a proper surgical treatment such as: Lobectomy, Lobeisthmusectomy, STT, NTT or TT.

In 73% of cases with thyroid cancer were performed Total Thyroidectomy and Near Total Thyroidectomy and in 27% of cases were performed TT or near TT+Neck dissection.

Conclusions: Surgical treatment of the thyroid gland is indicated in cases of thyroid enlargement for esthetical reasons, when there is neck compression, to determine the histological type, and in cases with Morbus Graves that cannot be treated with medicaments. In cases of thyroid nodules surgical treatment is indicated to remove and determine the histological type. Thyroidectomy is an absolute indication in cases of thyroid cancer, neck dissection is recommended to prevent metastases or to remove existing metastases.
