Epistaxis is a relatively common and widespread phenomenon, but it is not an independent disease – it always is a consequence of some other illness, its external expression. Similar is the thrombosis of veins- it is always a complication of some another disease- ottitis media, sinusitis.

Otorhinolaryngology as independent speciality in Latvia starts at 1903. Founder of the speciality was Doctor Bergmann and doctor Voss. Many Latvian otolaringologists were interested in and describe blood weasels problems- bleeding and thrombosis in ENT praxis.Nowadays we have a new approaches, new possibilities to stop bleeding of the nose. An analyses of medical files of 145 patients, who were treated at the Department of Otorinolaringology P. Stradins University Hospital, in connection epistaxis in 2005 (63 patients) and in 2006 (82 patients), was carried out.Since all these patients needed anterior or posterior nasal packing and they needed hospital assistance, it was presumed that this kind of bleedings of a nose is to be qualified as significant.Conventional nasal packing cannot stop bleeding in 25% of cases. (Montgomerya, Readon, 1980). However surgical ligation of blood vessels which are involved in blood circulation of a nose is the last possibility to stop the bleeding of a nose. One of relative new and very perspective method is embolisation of a.maxillaries and a. sphenopalatina to stop severe bleeding in cases, which needs to perform posterior nasal packing.Ever since radiologists can provide a considerable help, by embolization of tumours and blood vessels’ malformations, stopping the endovascular bleeding, temporary or permanent occlusion of carotid.
