Introduction: Results of stapes surgery in unilateral hearing loss in otosclerosis are evaluated regarding the audiologic outcome and subjective assessment.
Material and methods: This series represents 109 patients that were operated on for unilateral hearing loss in otosclerosis. In all patients standard primary stapedotomy with piston insertion was done. All patients were regularly followed up with good compliance for audiological data. Forty six have responded the questionnaire regarding the quality of hearing and life after the surgery.
Results: Overclosure of the airbone gap was reached in 18 subjects, closure up to 20 dB in 101 patients. These two groups represent 92.6% of patients.
Questionnair results: improvement of hearing is subjectively confirmed in 87% of respondees. Only 26% of respondees confirmed the hearing to be on the level of non-operated normal hearing ear.
Conclusion: Subjective evaluation of hearing after stapedotomy in the unilateral hearing loss in otosclerosis does not match with the audiometric results. Patients are quite critical to the hearing in the operated ear in compare to the normal hearing ear.
