We examined 23 patients after thyroid gland surgery who showed a paresis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, the superior laryngeal nerve or both. Postoperative symptoms such as aspiration, dyspnoea and hoarseness had been documented. It was found that a paresis of the recurrent laryngeal nerve is often associated with a paresis of the superior laryngeal nerve. As we only examined patients with postoperative problems it is necessary to review all patients after thyroid gland operations to find out the real incidence of the paresis of the superior laryngeal nerve.
