Background: Scars of the vocal folds may lead to a significant impairment of voice quality and represent a challenge in phonosurgery. Specific surgical techniques, e.g. medialisation or mucosal flaps, are able to improve phonation.

Material and methods: In a retrospective study 23 patients with medialisation procedures (2000–2007) including the implantation of septal cartilage for improvement of voice quality were evaluated. Voice range profile, hoarseness diagram, RBH-scale and standardized questionnaires were performed.

Results: Significant improvement was noted in the subjective rating of voice and life quality. Breathiness of the RBH-scale dropped significantly after medialisation procedure. Phonation quotient improved by 261 ml/sec. Reading voice range profile rose by 5.3 semi tones.

Conclusion: Application of endolaryngeal medialisation of the vocal folds after cordectomy may lead to an improvement of voice and life quality.
