Comparison between the new speech coding strategy MP3000 and ACE at the first fitting phase

Nowadays speech perception with a cochlear implant is satisfying in quiet environment, but there are limitations in noise. A reason could be the low bandwidth of the cochlear implants, which does not allow for detailed temporal information. The new speech coding strategy MP3000 could possibly optimize the transmission of such structures.
Until now MP3000 was evaluated exclusively with subjects who had significant experience of hearing with the conventional strategies ACE or CIS.
In our study we investigate the new speech coding strategy MP3000 in a group of newly-implanted subjects without previous experience. So far, nine subjects take part in this evaluation and are undergoing HSM sentence test in different conditions as well as questionnaires about hearing situations and sound quality of music. All subjects are implanted with the Nucleus RE Contour Advance implant. The averaged age was 58.5 years (varying from 23.5 to 79.9 years) and an averaged deafness of 11.8 years (varying from 0 to 78.8 years).
Five out of nine subjects who have completely finished the study show a preference towards the speech coding strategy MP3000 rather than ACE. HSM sentence score in quiet was 36.7% with MP3000 and 33.4% with ACE.
