Purpose: Challenging behaviour of people with dementia in nursing homes constitutes the most difficult situation for nurses, caregivers and physicians. Often it is treated with psychotropic drugs which are not helpful nor evidence based. The ongoing study aims at improving residents' QoL through a better collaboration of nurses and GPs and case conferences in nursing home. Two guidelines – one for nurses on dealing with challenging behaviour and one for GPs on medical treatment of dementia – are implemented. Furthermore multidisciplinary case conferences are performed in nursing homes using a standardized instrument to detect jointly reasons for resident’s behaviour.

Method: The study uses a pre-post-test design with an indirect control group based on the prescriptions rates of neuroleptics in the project region. The resident’s (n=182) QoL (Qualidem), challenging behaviour (NPI-NH), physical maintenance (PSMS) and psychotropic medication are assessed before and 9 month after the intervention beginning.

Results: The study’s preliminary results will be presented and experiences with the trainings and case conferences and their possible influence on challenging behaviors will be discussed.

Conclusion: Dementia care puts high demands on nurses and GPs. The use of case conferences might have an influence on the residents quality of care in nursing homes showing challenging behaviours.
