Simultaneous development of an educational guide for adults and young people with type 1 diabetes and of an evidence-based clinical practice guidelines

Background: A better implementation of CPG recommendations can be achieved by developing documents with specific advices intended for patients. Evidence-based CPGs and educational guidelines require a different methodological development process but they must have a concordant content.
Objectives: To develop two different documents aimed (1) to provide adults and young people receiving intensive treatment for type 1 diabetes with a guideline to help them to take control of their disease for the Spanish cultural and social context and (2) to support decision making in the clinical practice.
Methods: Firstly, a group of clinicians with wide experience in type 1 diabetes management developed the CPG 'Management of type 1 diabetes mellitus' based on up-to-date scientific evidence. Secondly, a multidisciplinary expert group in diabetes education brought together the most important educational aspects relevant to the Spanish context for adults and young people. Both documents were developed separately and their recommendations were compared and discussed afterwards.
Results: No significant differences were detected in the recommendations between the educational guide and the evidence-based CPG, other than the duration of action of different insulin types.The evidence about these recommendations was analysed, and the differences were discussed and adapted in the educational guide.
Discussion: Guidelines will require a different methodology depending on the audience, but concordant information is necessary for all the stakeholders.
Implications for guideline developers/users: If different groups are developing different products for the management of a disease, an effort must be made to provide the same messages and recommendations.
