Background: With the development of guidelines development and implementation, more and more new terms or glossaries which related to guidelines (guideline glossary, GG) are appearing, such as GINDER, AGREE, GRADE, EBM, Cochrane, systematic reviews, knowledge translation, and so on. These new terms became an obstacle of understanding and using guidelines. Standardization of glossary is important and necessary for both for guideline developers and clinicians. Collecting and unifying GG will promote the development and implementation of guidelines.

Objective: Investigating how many GG and establishing the database of collection, analysis and the translating system for non-English speaking countries.

Methods: Eight databases (to February 2012) including MEDLINE, EMBASE, SCI, CBM, Cochrane library and relevant websites were searched. The search terms were 'guidelines', 'evidence-based medicine', 'systematic review', 'Meta analysis', 'glossary, 'terminology', and so on.

Results: There are about 500 terms related to guidelines published or as an appendix in more than 200 articles, 100 books and 100 websites. There are three main questions need to be discussion: Firstly, there is no determinate definition for the GG; Secondly, GG appeared overlapping in the field of clinical epidemiology, medical information, clinical medicine, evidence based medicine, and so on; Thirdly, many people misunderstand, misuse and abuse the GG. Fourthly, Non-English speaking countries need a guideline to translate the GG correctly.

Conclusion: It is time to collect and unify the GG. We initiated a project to achieve the goal, and it also wish to seek cooperation with GIN or other related organizations.
