Background: Guideline development in mental healthcare has developed considerably including the formulation of quality indicators. The new mental healthcare quality indicators of the German Psychiatric Association will be described including a discussion of the critical issues in psychiatric quality indicator development. General guidelines for mental health services have been developed, for example for accreditation purposes of mental healthcare facilities. The European Psychiatric Association has developed guidance recommendations concerning mental health services. The question arises whether international standards for mental health systems should and can be developed.
Objectives: To describe the current state of the art in standards for mental healthcare.
