German Medical Science (gms) is an electronically published journal of the Association of the Scientific Medical Societies in Germany (AWMF) and its member societies. Target group are all health professionals from all ranges of medical science, research and supply. The AWMF and its societies place editor in Chief and Editorial board as well as consultants for the Peer Review procedure; within the ZBMed is settled the technical editorship, marketing as well as standardisation measures, with the DIMDI the line of the software development, the technical implementation as well as enterprise and archiving of the journals. German Medical Science as interdisciplinary, internationally oriented publication will exhibit a set of advantages against traditional publication forms:

·speed of publication and access

·time near and international knowledge transfer

·integration into national and international reference data bases (MEDLINE, EMBASE)

·long-term archiving and quoting barness

·free spreading of the full texts

·access to original data of the publications

·discussion of the work in forums

·determination of the number of accesses as a document-referred alternative to the Impact Factor.

·All the rights of exploitation remain with the author, who grants gms only the right to temporally unlimited line-to-store transfer of the work in data bases as well as the spreading and rendition in electronic form (on-line and off-line).

In the final development stage German Medical Science holds three publication ranges:

·German Medical Science publishes high-ranking interdisciplinary original works out of the total spectrum of medicine.

·German Medical Science publishes electronic journals from scientific medical societies under their own title with scientific original articles and reviews.

·A third range of public and internal communication of each medical society (forums, newsgroup, Congress-Reports).

Besides German Medical Science publishes articles in German and English. German-language works have to contain a detailed English summary to guarantee the ability of integration into international reference data bases. German Medical Science follows a author-friendly copyright-policy: In principle all copyrights remain by the author, who has to delegate only the copyright for the line-to-store transfer in data bases and the electronic distribution to German Medical Science.
