Objective

To work out classification of ARM stages, using clinical-functional parameters and also of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) data.

Methods

Clinical and OCT examination were performed in 63 eyes. Cluster analysis has been applied for classifying the three stages of ARM.

Results

Visual acuity, photostress test, relative and absolute scotomas, thickness of a retina in the central zone, in 3 and in 6 mm sector, and also druses height (mc) were defined in patients with ARM. The abovementioned parameters had a wide range of values. Visual acuity within 0,12 - 1,0; photostress test - from 40 up to 150 sec.; absolute scotoma - from 18 up to 38 %; relative scotoma - from 0 up to 23 %. OCT data are characterized by a wide scatter also. The minimal druses height according to OCT were 25 mc, maximal - 102 mc. Due to wide range of the data describing ARM classification of eyes by cluster analysis method has been performed. 3 classes as much as possible differing at the same time on 8 above-stated parameters have been determined. The Significance value of distinctions (F-test) in the classes determined was less than 0,0001. The first cluster of patients at which have made the highest visual functions VA=0,79±0,14 lower values absolute 21,9±1,5 and relative cattle 3,8±2,8 and also lower values of thickness of a retina in the central, 3 and 6 mm zones (197,8±18,8 are combined with the less values of photostress test 50,6±11,0, and also; 246,1±16,7; 223,4±13,3 accordingly), and also the less values of druses height according to ОCТ 53,6±16,5. The second cluster: VA=0,53±0,20; photostress test 91,2± 25,0, absolute and relative scotomas made up 25,3± 3,6 and 9,8±4,5 accordingly; thickness of retina in central, 3 and 6 mm zones 237,9±31,2; 68,6±22,5; 242,3±20,1 accordingly, druse’s height 69,5±13,5. The third cluster: VA=0,27±0,10; photostress test 132,7±8,8, absolute and relative scotomas made up 34,3±3,8 and 13,7±5,1 accordingly; thickness of retina in central, 3 and 6 mm zones 280,7±48,5; 306,3±29,9; 278,2±28,2 accordingly, druse’s height 77,2±17,8.

Conclusions

By means of cluster analysis 3 classes of patients were determined considering on the value of 8 parameters (VA, photostress test, on absolute and relative scotomas and thickness of a retina in the central, 3 and 6 mm zones classes differ statistically significance (p≤0,013) describing the course of ARM.
