In 1999 WHO launched the programme Vision 2020 with the aim to reduce avoidable blindness worldwide by the year 2020. The consequences of Vision 2020, impact and demands shall be discussed for the situation in Germany. Vision 2020 shall have the following priorities for Germany:
1. Reduction of blindness in Germany from glaucoma and diabetic retinotpathy through early detection and treatment.
2. Cooperations of University Eye Departments (Twinning) for training of ophthalmologists in Africa and Asia.
3. Organization of short-term-lecturer-ships of ophthalmologists in the Universities in Third World Countries.
4. Organization of short-term-visits of German ophthalmologists through the German Committee for the Prevention of Blindness and NGO´s.
5. Invitation of foreign colleagues for fellowships and participation in meetings in Germany.
A coordinated action under the Vision 2020 programme involving German opthalmologists, NGO´s, the German Committee, BVA and DOG can help to ímprove eye care in poorer countries of the southern hemisphere.
